Redonk Nutshell: Attraction burns hot between two childhood friends working with disadvantaged youth

Two things made me pick this up: 1) I’ve never read a Harlequin Blaze book (I KNOW!!!!)  and 2) it was by Jill Shalvis, who is a seasoned pro at contemporary romance.

Mark Diego plans to teach his two insubordinate NHL players a lesson by volunteering in  his hometown, recently hit up by forest fires.  What he doesn’t count on is running into Rainey Saunders, a friend from his youth who he never could quite shake from his memory.  Their attraction is evident, but their dislike for each other even more so.  Or at least that’s what they try to tell themselves…

I actually really enjoyed this.  It was an indulgent read, a humorous yet heartfelt story of two people who are both incredibly stubborn to admit they’re a wonderful fit.  The characters are relatable in a way that had me feeling sympathetic for both of them.  Ms. Shalvis is an expert at creating characters we like to watch while kicking back with a bag o’ popcorn. Let the sparks fly, I say!
