Redonk Nutshell: Fortune teller and man of science go toe-to-toe and end up entangling with one another in a complex web of self reflection and passion

I’ve gone about Courtney Milan’s books all backwards and out of order.  And I’m kind of glad for it. Proof by Seduction is Milan’s debut book. Her sophomore release, Trial by Desire, was my first.  I then tackled Unveiled, and more recently Unlocked.  I scooped up Proof by Seduction at my local library book sale back in May, and I finally got around to reading it.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again.  Milan has a tremendous skill in writing flawed and multifaceted characters.  Their packages are beautiful and appealing, yet underneath they’re just like you and me – complex and riveting.  Many romance books are quick and fluffy reads, not necessarily requiring all your synapses to be firing to comprehend and enjoy the book.  Milan’s books make you sit up and pay attention to what you’re reading.  They make you think, and they make you care.

It’s fantastic.

Jenny has been telling fortunes to make her living, and she comes from a tough upbringing, one that has helped to shape her to who she is today.  She is smart and compassionate, and though life throws her curve balls, she’s not one to wallow.  She’s a pick-yourself-up-and-start-all-over kind of woman. Gareth is hard and cold, a realist reliant on common sense and quick to cut with his strict words.  When he reluctantly is dragged to Jenny aka Madame Esmerelda by his cousin, Ned, he immediately sets out to disprove her.  What he doesn’t count on is being entangled by her intelligence and her challenges.  Jenny fights him tooth and nail, but in the process ends up becoming attached to him.  Both are forced to examine themselves and what they stand for, and in the end they’re better for it.

They’re relationship is anything but clean and tidy.  It’s messy, it’s passionate, and it’s heart wrenching.  It’s, simply, wonderful.

I think what I really enjoyed about this book was seeing Ned.  Trial by Desire is a favorite of mine, and getting his backstory was a special treat for me.  I’m definitely going to re-read his book in the future, now that I know more about what happened leading up to his story.
