Redonk Nutshell: Reluctant Queen navigates stormy waters of polictical turmoil and her unwelcome husband

Having enjoyed Ms. Kluver’s first book, Legacy, I was excited to get my grubby paws on book two and find out how Alera was faring. And…okay…see how much of an ass her husband was being.

As with book one, Ms. Kluver manages to write of regal tasks and political intrigue in a way that grabs your attention and forces you to become addicted. I really, really had to know what was going to happen next. Watching Alera mature into her role was extremely satisfying. Despite her fears of being queen she assumes the role quite well.

We’re also treated to seeing her husband and King, Steldor, mature as well. The truth of Alera’s relationship with the “enemy” eventually comes out, and gradually both Steldor and Alera comes to terms with the fact that they are not, and will never be, a love match. Alera stands firm in her resolve to distance her heart from him, and Steldor slowly learns to accept it.

Allegiance is a wonderful installment into what promises to be an epic conclusion to a fascinating fantasy series.
