This was my first read by Shannon Stacey, and I was intrigued by the premise. A successful tabloid reporter, Keri Daniels, is tasked by her boss to dig up some dirt on reclusive author Joe Kowalski. Keri has an “in” – she and Joe were high school sweethearts. Joe agrees to give her an exclusive on one condition – she has to attend his family’s annual two week vacation in the backwoods. Keri agrees, knowing fully well that more than her job is riding on the line.
I really enjoyed this book. It’s an indulgent banquet of everything a contemporary romance should be. Ms. Stacey finds the perfect balance between humor, drama and romance, creating imperfect characters that are fascinating to follow. Keri & Joe’s struggle to find solid footing amid their rocky past makes a wonderful story. Both of them leave after their two weeks knowing more not just about each other but about themselves as well. It’s a character driven story, and it’s lovely. Add in some witty banter between brothers, a horde of crazy children, and camping in the backwoods and you’ve got a recipe for a well rounded, rich story. And who doesn’t love second chance romances?
