Redonk Nutshell: Six months after Shivaree, Shane, Gabriel & Natalie reunite and reassess their relationship.
I enjoyed Cara McKenna’s romp, Shivaree. You can imagine my delight when I realized Getaway was a follow-up. Oh yeeeeaaaaah.
Six months after Natalie broke down in the bayou in Louisiana, she’s back in Rochester and attempting to re-establish herself in a routine. When Shane shows up at her door, she’s pleasantly surprised. Shane is more confused than ever, and he’s desperate to make a clean break from his obsession with his lover, Gabriel. He’s hoping time with Natalie will clean the slate. What he doesn’t count on is Gabriel following him.
Getaway is Shane’s story, more or less, and his attempt to figure out what the heck it is that he wants. He doesn’t consider himself to be gay, but his love for Gabriel is undeniable. He’s convinced Gabriel doesn’t share these feelings, so when the man himself comes charging after him, he’s stunned. And even more confused. Natalie helps them figure out what, exactly, they are to each other.
Getaway is a lovely conclusion to an intense trilogy. I haven’t read the first, though I imagine someday I will. We get something of a HEA in this story, though I’ll forewarn you it’s not exactly what you’d be expecting. And because this is Cara McKenna, it’s handled beautifully.
